Brain Optimization and Brain Fog Treatment
in Ashburn, VA and Bethesda, MD

Brain optimization at Next Health is a personalized program that looks at the biological factors that may affect brain fog, focus and memory, then builds a treatment plan around what your results show. Dr. Mahsin Habib, MD uses your consultation, lab results and objective data to identify what is holding your brain back.

We see patients from Washington DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia at our Ashburn, VA and Bethesda, MD locations.

What Is Brain Optimization and Who Is It For?

Brain optimization is a personalized program designed to support cognitive performance, emotional regulation and long term neurological resilience. It looks at how your brain works in daily life, including attention, processing speed, memory, stress response and recovery after mental or physical strain. In simple terms, it supports brain function and brain health by finding what is getting in the way instead of guessing.

It may be a good fit if you notice brain fog, trouble focusing, memory lapses, mental fatigue or slow recovery after stress. Dr. Habib is a board trained internal medicine physician with over 30 years of clinical experience.

We Begin By Assessing Key Drivers That Commonly Disrupt Brain Function

  • Sleep quality
  • Inflammation
  • Metabolic health
  • Hormone balance
  • Nutrient status
  • Autonomic nervous system tone

This helps us identify whether the core issue is overload, under recovery, poor fuel delivery, or dysregulated stress signaling.

What Causes Brain Fog, Poor Focus and Memory Problems?

Brain fog is not a formal diagnosis. It is a group of symptoms that affect how you think, remember, and concentrate, and it can follow an illness, come from a medication side effect, or signal an underlying condition. People often describe trouble remembering, concentrating, or finding the right words.

Sleep. Poor or short sleep affects memory, attention, alertness, and decision-making.

Nutrients. Low vitamin B12 can cause poor memory and confusion. Supplements are more likely to help people with a confirmed deficiency.

Thyroid. Underactive thyroid commonly brings fatigue, low mood, and difficulty with memory and executive function.

Hormones and other conditions. Perimenopause, anemia, long COVID and some medications can also disrupt thinking.

How Is Brain Fog Treated?

There is no single treatment for brain fog, because treatment depends on the cause. That is why the first step is a proper evaluation. Blood work can help identify irregular glucose levels, thyroid, liver or kidney problems, nutritional deficiencies, infections and inflammatory disease. Depending on the cause, relief may come from correcting a nutritional deficiency, changing a medication or improving sleep.

Everyday habits help too. Rest, social engagement, healthy eating, hydration and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol all support clear thinking, and daily physical activity and short breaks during the day can help with alertness. Before you buy supplements, a blood test can show whether a vitamin deficiency is actually the cause.

At Next Health, treatment follows the same principle: find the cause first. Our brain optimization program assesses sleep quality, inflammation, metabolic health, hormone balance, nutrient status and autonomic nervous system tone, then builds a plan from your results. How Does Next Health Assess Brain Function?

We take an hour on average with you, because a thorough assessment is what makes an effective plan possible. Dr. Habib combines what he learns in your consultation with your lab results and, when needed, conventional testing technology.

This helps us identify whether the core issue is overload, under-recovery, poor fuel delivery, or dysregulated stress signaling. Your program also includes a functional EEG. Related pages: Bio Age, DNA Age and Sleep Issues.

What Is Included in the Brain Optimization Program?

Your brain optimization treatment plan is built from your results, so it differs from person to person. The program includes a functional EEG, and your plan may also include NAD+ IV therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, along with lifestyle and recovery protocols chosen to support neural performance and stability.

Progress is tracked with repeatable metrics over time, alongside the improvements you notice yourself.

When Should You See a Doctor About Brain Fog?

Brain fog that lasts beyond two weeks, affects work or safety, or comes with warning signs such as severe headache or changes in speech needs medical attention. Sudden confusion, severe headache or speech changes need urgent care, not a wellness program.

Brain Optimization FAQs

It depends on what is driving your symptoms and how long they have been present. Individual results vary. Because progress is tracked with repeatable metrics, you can see change over time instead of relying only on how you feel.

Your plan is built from your consultation and lab results, so the length depends on your findings and goals.

An EEG records the brain’s electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp. A functional EEG is included in the Next Health brain optimization program.

The FDA has cleared hyperbaric chambers only for a specific list of conditions and has not cleared them for conditions beyond that list. Brain fog and cognitive performance are not on that list, so this use is considered off label. Whether it is part of your plan depends on your assessment.

Human evidence is still limited. A randomized trial of an oral NAD+ precursor in people with long COVID found no significant change in cognition compared with placebo. A double blind trial of an NAD+ supplement also found no cognitive improvement over placebo, though larger studies may be needed. A recent systematic review found no eligible studies of intravenous NAD+ itself for anti aging or wellness outcomes. For that reason, NAD+ is considered as one part of an individualized plan, not a guaranteed fix.

Start with what research supports. Sleep affects attention, memory and decision making. WHO guidelines on reducing the risk of cognitive decline cover physical activity, healthy diet, tobacco and alcohol reduction, and management of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The same guidance does not recommend B vitamins, vitamin E, omega 3 or multivitamin supplements for this purpose in people without a diagnosed deficiency. When symptoms persist, an assessment can show whether sleep, nutrient status, thyroid or hormone factors are involved, and that is where a personalized program can help.

No. Brain optimization supports cognitive performance and brain resilience and is not presented as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The FDA notes that hyperbaric oxygen is not proven to treat Alzheimer’s disease. If memory loss is getting worse or affecting daily life, see a physician or neurologist for a full evaluation.
